Since 1986 I have almost continuously been involved in EC projects. I have been coordinator of all projects listed below, apart from PIMS, KADS, Kaleidoscope, and APOSDLE.
· PIMS (Project Integrated Management System). 1986-1987. In PIMS a support system for managers of ICT projects was developed.
· KADS. KADS intended to develop a methodology for the development of knowledge-based systems
· SAFE/SIMULATE. In SIMULATE which was a sub-project of the larger SAFE project, we made a very first prototype of what later became SimQuest.
· SMISLE took up the challenge from SAFE/SIMULATE and here we created a full functioning but still prototype of an authoring environment for learning with simulations.
· SERVIVE was a project in the Telematics programme. It was the successor of SMISLE. In SERVIVE a marketable version of SMISLE was created. This product, called SimQuest, is downloadable for free.
· The EC project KITS project started in May 2000 and ended half way 2003. The learning environment KMQuest was developed in this project.
· The Co-Lab project was a follow-up of the SERVIVE project. This project has ended June 2004.
· The Kaleidoscope project was a Network of Excellence (NoE) under the 6th framework programme of the EC. Kaleidoscope focuses on Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). For this NoE I was on the executive committee in 2004 and 2005. Kaleidoscope ended by the end of 2007.
· The APOSDLE project was a so-called Integrated Project (IP) on self-directed on the workplace learning. This project started March 1, 2006 and ended March 1, 2010.
· The SCY project is an IP that started on March 1, 2008 and ended March 2012. In SCY we developed a learning environment (SCY-Lab) that is based on students' designs, on the use of versatile and flexible scenarios, and exchange of learner generated learning objects. With one of the SCY applications we have won a prize issued by Science.
· On November 1, 2012 the Go-Lab project started. Go-Lab is an IP on learning from remote and virtual labs. The Go-Lab repository can be found at www.golabz.eu. Here you can watch a Go-Lab smart show. A video showing one of our virtual labs can be seen here. And an interview and promo about Go-Lab (in Dutch) can be found here. Go-Lab ended November 1, 2016.
· Next-Lab, which started January 1 2017, is the H2020 follow-up of Go-Lab. Next-Lab is an Innovation action meaning that the its focus is on impact and implementation. In Next-Lab we will extend Go-lab with features for collaboration and modelling by students, also a ePortfolio facility will be developed. Next-Lab will include primary schools and pre-service teacher training departments.
· GO-GA (Go-Lab goes Africa) started January 1 2018. The main purpose of this H2020 Innovation Action is to introduce Go-Lab in three African countries (Kenya, Benin, and Nigeria).
· ZAP (Zeer Actieve Psychologie; Very Active Psychology). This project was sponsored by SURF. In the project a database of small interactive training programs for phenomena and experiments in Psychology was developed. ZAP was a cooperative project with the Erasmus University Rotterdam and started at January 01, 2002 and ended in February 2004. The Dutch ZAPs are available through the project's website. The English versions of these ZAPs, plus fifteen additional ones, are distributed by W.W. Norton.
· "Inquiry learning with computer simulations in vocational education". The project ran from 2009-2013. Post-doc on the project is Bas Kollöffel.
· "Learning from dynamical representations at interactive whiteboards". This project ran in 2011.
· From October 2012 until March 2013 we ran a project on an interactive learning environment for learning about trigonometry. Here you can get an impression of the developed software.
· The BE COOL! project investigates the inclusion of high performing students in inquiry learning environments. Sponsored by "Onderwijs Bewijs" and started in 2011.
NWO (Dutch NSF) projects
· Research program "Inductive learning" (1997—2002). In cooperation with University of Leiden and University of Amsterdam. Resulting in theses by Casper Hulshof (Twente), Pascal Wilhelm (Leiden) and Hedderik van Rijn (Amsterdam).
· PhD-project “Learning by design in SimQuest” (1999-2004). In this project we investigated if students (in this case students from vocational education) could learn by designing scaffolds for simulation-based learning. Results are reported in the thesis of Cornelise Vreman.
· PhD-project “Collaborative discovery learning”, (2000-2005). This project is documented in the thesis by Hannie Gijlers.
· PhD project “ICT-based structured discovery learning for mathematics” (2003-2007). In this project we investigated a large scale implementation of inquiry software for mathematics. The project is documented in the thesis of Petra Hendrikse.
· Post-doc project “The interaction between cognitive and communicative processes in collaborative learning” (2005-2006).
· Research programme “Affordances for Learning in Multimedia Learning Environments” (2004-2008). In cooperation with OUNL (Heerlen), Freiburg, and Tübingen. Sponsored by NWO/PROO and DFG (Germany). Resulting theses by Bas Kollöffel (Twente), Pieter Wouters (Heerlen), Kristine Berthold (Freiburg) and Maria Bannert (Tübingen). Post-doc on the project was Tessa Eijsink.
· Research programme "Play your way into math; the effects of learning math by gaming on vocational students’ math knowledge”(2011-2015). In cooperation with Utrecht and Leuven. Sponsored by NWO/PROO and FWO (Belgium). This short video gives an impression of the game that was developed.
· The NWO/FES project "Learning through modeling and self explanations" is part of the larger project "Learning in a brain and cognition perspective".
· A review study on “ Inquiry learning support for children and adolescents: what works when and why?“ was rewarded by NWO/PROO in 2013 (PI Ard Lazonder).
· NWO project “21st century skills for vocational technical students; a high-tech approach” one PhD, two post-docs. (2016—2020)
