Teaching

Teaching mathematics in secondary school. Teaching mathematics education in a teacher training college for elementary school teachers. Experience in teaching statistics and research methodology in a Faculty of Psychology. Teaching of computer‑based learning, interaction design, media management, design and research methodology, and human-computer interface courses in a Faculty of Educational Science and Technology.

Research and Development

Involvement with computer applications in education since 1973. Experience with media research in general. In particular with the choice, design, development, implementation and evaluation of courseware, multimedia and telemedia on mainframe computers, the PLATO system, minicomputers, and microcomputers. Lately focussing on research on the cost-effectiveness and return-on-investment of  ICT in education and training. Involved in the supervision of more than 150 Masters thesis and promoter (primary supervisor) of 29 doctoral dissertations.

Consultancies

Member of a national committee in Belgium for the revision of the mathematics curriculum for the elementary school (1967‑1980). Central involvement in the preparation and execution of major aspects of national planning for the stimulation of information technology in education in the Netherlands (1981-1989). Consultant or member of Advisory committees on learning technology and computer‑based training to Dutch companies and organisations (such as SVO, NWO, TNO, Rathenau Institute, Dutch Educational Television-Teleac/NOT, Social-Economic Council), the Dutch Ministry of Education, the Dutch Open University, the European Community, UNESCO, the International Labor Office, the World Bank, Shell, Philips, Kennisnet (NL). Honorary Advisory Professor of East China Normal University (Shanghai). Member of EU Prometeus Steering Committee.

Management

Management experiences as director of a research and development institute (COI: a national center initiated by the Dutch government), as director of a private company (Educational Computing Consortium: an educational software development company), as the project leader of many (multidisciplinary) projects (for instance the PRONTO-project : a seven-year project connecting development, implementation and evaluation activities of Dutch secondary schools and the Faculty of Educational Science and Technology with respect to the introduction of computers in secondary education; IDYLLE: a four-year project combining researchers from the Faculty of Educational Science and Technology, and the Faculty of Computer Science; Social-Design Methodology: a four-year project combining researchers of the Faculty of Educational Science and Technology, the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Public Administration and the Faculty of Business Administration), as a participant is many European and national projects (Delta, Precise, TeleScopia, Plato, Forum, Mesh) and as a chairman and dean of a university department and faculty. Central involvement in the organisation of major conferences on computers, education and teacher training (EURIT '86, EURIT '88, CAL for Europe in 1986, European Conference on Eductional Research in 1992, Teacher Training and Information Technology--a conference sponsored by UNESCO and CEC, February 1994).
